World"Iran Considers Exiting Nuclear Treaty Amid Global Tensions"

Iran’s parliament is considering the option of pulling out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a move that would release Tehran from global constraints on nuclear weapons development and the requirement for international inspections of its nuclear program.

The decision for review was made citing perceived “bullying” on the international stage, particularly during the current conflict, which follows previous American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, questioned the benefits of staying in a treaty that hinders their rights and allows attacks on their nuclear facilities. He emphasized that Iran has no intention of pursuing nuclear weapons.

Recent reports suggest that Iran is contemplating a broader strategy shift, which may include withdrawing from the NPT, revoking a law tied to the 2014 nuclear deal, and supporting a new global framework with similar nations for peaceful nuclear technology advancement.

The US and Israel have initiated a sustained military campaign against Iran, alleging the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, a claim vehemently denied by Tehran. Last year, the US targeted key nuclear sites in Iran, prompting the movement of partially enriched uranium from those facilities.

Former US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a risky military operation to seize uranium stockpiles within Iran, signaling a potential escalation in tensions.

Despite discussions on potentially leaving the NPT, Iranian officials assert that their nuclear activities are solely for peaceful purposes. Analysts caution that exiting the treaty could reduce oversight, increase regional instability, and lead to new sanctions or diplomatic isolation.

While a parliamentary review does not automatically equate to withdrawal, Iran has the autonomy to exit the treaty without external approval.

Since the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018, Iran’s nuclear program has made significant progress. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed concerns about Iran’s growing supply of highly enriched uranium, which could be used for multiple nuclear weapons if further enriched.
