A legal claim alleges that Taylor Swift’s album “The Life of a Showgirl” has infringed on the intellectual property of a real showgirl named Maren Wade. Wade has filed a lawsuit in U.S. federal court in California, stating that Swift’s album branding closely resembles her own work titled “Confessions of a Showgirl.”

Wade, known as a singer, songwriter, comedian, and writer, created the “Confessions of a Showgirl” column for the Las Vegas Weekly in 2014, which later evolved into a live show and a national tour. The lawsuit argues that both works share similar structures, dominant phrases, and overall commercial impressions, targeting overlapping markets and consumers.

“The Life of a Showgirl,” Swift’s 12th studio album released in October 2025, garnered significant success by selling four million copies in its debut week. The album cover features Swift in Las Vegas cabaret attire submerged in water, sporting an orange and mint green color scheme.

Despite initially showing support for Swift’s use of the showgirl image on social media, Wade has recently gone quiet online. The lawsuit names Swift’s trademark management company, record label, and merchandising arm as additional defendants, alleging “textbook reverse confusion” where the junior user’s commercial dominance overshadows the senior user’s mark.

Swift’s team declined to comment on the lawsuit. Wade and her legal counsel argue that Swift’s team should have been aware of the existence and trademark of “Confessions of a Showgirl.” The lawsuit mentions that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office refused to register the “Life of a Showgirl” trademark due to potential confusion with an existing mark.

Seeking an injunction to prevent Swift and her entities from using the “Life of a Showgirl” name and imagery, the lawsuit also demands monetary damages, including profits linked to the brand’s usage.
