A 20-year-old man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, targeted the residence of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, in San Francisco by throwing a Molotov cocktail. The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) swiftly arrested Moreno-Gama after the incident. Prosecutors have stated that the suspect’s motive was to kill Altman due to concerns about the impact of AI on humanity.
A federal criminal complaint revealed that Daniel traveled from Texas with the intention to harm Sam Altman. In response, Altman posted a blog featuring a picture of his family, emphasizing that they should not be targeted. Shortly after this incident, two individuals allegedly fired shots at Altman’s house, leading to their arrest by the SFPD.
The attack involved Moreno-Gama throwing an incendiary device at Altman’s residence, resulting in a fire at the driveway gate. Subsequently, he proceeded to OpenAI’s headquarters, where he damaged the glass doors and made threats before being apprehended by the police. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.
Following Moreno-Gama’s arrest, authorities discovered a document outlining his intentions, including references to killing AI executives. The document expressed concerns about the existential risks posed by AI and issued a warning to Altman. Moreno-Gama carried incendiary devices, kerosene, a lighter, and the anti-AI document during his trip from Texas to California.
The suspect now faces federal charges related to attempted property damage with explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. FBI officials described the attack as premeditated and severe, highlighting the transition from intent to violent action. FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned that the bureau conducted an operation in Texas related to the case.
