Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that she rejected the proposal for U.S. military involvement in combating drug cartels after a productive discussion with President Donald Trump regarding security and drug trafficking. She emphasized that Mexico remains committed to collaborative efforts while maintaining its sovereignty and autonomy.

During their talks, which also touched on trade and investment, both leaders underscored the importance of respecting Mexico’s sovereignty in addressing security challenges and curbing drug trafficking. Trump’s recent remarks on Fox News suggesting potential military action in Mexico to combat drug cartels have raised concerns.

In response to the escalating threats of U.S. military intervention in Mexico, Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente held discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to enhance cooperation in dismantling violent narco-terrorist networks and preventing the trafficking of fentanyl and weapons. Sheinbaum highlighted a significant decrease in fentanyl trafficking from Mexico to the United States over the past year.

Furthermore, Sheinbaum clarified that she did not engage in discussions about Cuba with Trump, particularly in light of his statements regarding Venezuela and Cuba’s oil and financial ties. She expressed Mexico’s willingness to facilitate communication between Cuba and the U.S. if requested. Regarding Venezuela, Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s stance against military interventions based on its constitutional principles.

The dialogue between the two leaders underscores the complex dynamics surrounding security issues in the region, with Mexico asserting its commitment to sovereign decision-making while engaging in cooperative efforts with the U.S.
