“Michael Bradley Named Head Coach of New York Red Bulls”

Sports"Michael Bradley Named Head Coach of New York Red Bulls"

Former Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley has been introduced as the new head coach of the New York Red Bulls, describing it as an “incredible opportunity.” Bradley takes over from Sandro Schwarz, who was relieved of his duties after two seasons in charge. The Red Bulls missed the playoffs this season, marking the end of a 15-year streak, finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12-15-7. In 2024, they reached the MLS Cup final but were defeated by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Bradley, aged 38, swiftly transitioned into coaching after retiring as a player in 2023 following a decade with Toronto FC. He served as an assistant coach at Norway’s Stabaek under his father Bob Bradley in 2024 before taking on the role of coach for the Red Bulls reserve team. Bradley guided the Red Bulls II to victory in the MLS Next Pro Cup in November, clinching the title in a penalty shootout against the Colorado Rapids 2.

The announcement of Bradley’s appointment as head coach of the Red Bulls first team was made on December 15 alongside New York sporting director Julian de Guzman, a former TFC player and Canada captain. Bradley expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing his readiness and determination to seize the moment.

Having earned 151 caps for the U.S. national team from 2006 to 2019, Bradley, a native of New Jersey, has strong connections to the Red Bulls franchise. He was selected by the then-MetroStars in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft when his father was coaching the team. Bradley’s illustrious playing career included stints in the Netherlands, Germany, England, and Italy before joining Toronto FC.

Bradley and de Guzman share a common goal of revitalizing the Red Bulls, aiming for a more dynamic and competitive team that plays attractive football. The club has already made changes to the roster, focusing on bringing in younger, faster players while parting ways with several individuals. Bradley’s experience and leadership qualities, honed over years as a player, will be instrumental in shaping the team’s future direction.
