“Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics Face Sustainability Challenges”

Top Stories"Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics Face Sustainability Challenges"

When athletes gather in Italy for the upcoming Winter Olympics, they will be spread across six Olympic villages spanning from Milan to the Antholz Valley. Organizing such a large-scale event across such a vast region has presented challenges, including the need to minimize environmental impact by limiting travel between clusters, as instructed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) staff.

IOC president Kirsty Coventry acknowledged the added complexities that come with dispersing the Games’ footprint in Italy to utilize existing venues. While emphasizing the importance of sustainability, Coventry mentioned that the IOC intends to reassess this model post-Olympics to strike a balance between sustainability and fan experience.

A working group established by Coventry last year is evaluating the Olympic disciplines to determine potential additions or removals, even exploring the possibility of sports crossing over between the summer and winter calendars.

The official commencement of the Milano-Cortina Olympics is scheduled for Feb. 6 with various parts of the opening ceremony taking place in different locations across Italy, including Milan’s San Siro Stadium.

Leading up to the opening ceremony, preparations are underway for the hockey arena in Milano Santagiulia, which has faced construction delays. The arena will host hockey games, including the crucial rounds for both men’s and women’s hockey.

Christophe Dubi, the IOC’s Olympic Games executive director, inspected the Milano Santagiulia arena and highlighted the ongoing work required before completion. He expressed confidence that the venue will be ready for competition.

In parallel, construction continues at a new sliding center in Cortina d’Ampezzo, which had experienced sabotage previously but has since been readied for testing.

Coventry is set to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance during the Milano-Cortina Olympics, as the U.S. prepares to host the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. While conversations have occurred with the L.A. 2028 organizing committee, formal communication with the White House is pending.

As geopolitical tensions rise, particularly in relation to the U.S., Coventry emphasized the IOC’s commitment to ensuring representation of all National Olympic Committees at the Games, despite external circumstances.
