Netflix Canada has announced the upcoming adaptation of Carley Fortune’s popular romance novel into a 10-episode series. The series is based on Fortune’s third book, “This Summer Will Be Different,” which follows Lucy as she encounters Felix, her best friend Bridget’s younger brother, during a summer on Prince Edward Island. Despite trying to avoid Felix, Lucy finds herself drawn to him during her annual visits to P.E.I. When Bridget faces a crisis before her wedding, Lucy accompanies her, conflicted about protecting her heart. The television adaptation will be filmed in Toronto and on Prince Edward Island to stay true to the book’s settings.

Carley Fortune, a Toronto-based writer and journalist, expressed her excitement about bringing the love story of “This Summer Will Be Different” to the screen. She highlighted the inspiration she drew from the beauty of Prince Edward Island and the warmth of its people, which serve as the backdrop for the novel. Fortune has previously written other novels, including “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” and “Meet Me at the Lake,” with her latest book, “Our Perfect Storm,” set to be published on May 5. “Every Summer After” is currently being adapted into a television series titled “Every Year After” on Amazon Prime Video. Additionally, “Meet Me at the Lake” was optioned for a film by Netflix and Archewell Productions in 2023, owned by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Fortune’s works have garnered attention, with “Meet Me at the Lake” being the first romance title to be considered for Canada Reads, championed in 2024 by Mirian Njoh. The author’s success continues to grow, with her engaging storytelling capturing the interest of readers and viewers alike.
