Apple recently introduced the latest iPad Air, featuring its M4 chip. Despite the current release, discussions about the next-generation iPad Air are already circulating online. While past models of the iPad Air utilized LED-backlit LCD panels, rumors suggest that the upcoming version, anticipated for launch next year, may come with an OLED display. This potential shift could align the iPad Air with the display technology seen in last year’s iPad Pro.
According to a report from Korean publication ETNews, Samsung Display is preparing to mass-produce OLED panels for the iPad Air by the end of 2026. Commencing production at that time would enable the panels to be integrated into the next year’s model, expected to hit the market around March or May.
The report emphasizes that iPad Air sales have consistently surpassed those of the iPad Pro. Unlike the iPad Pro, which faced lower demand due to its higher cost associated with OLED technology, the iPad Air benefits from lower specifications and production expenses. With the introduction of OLED, the iPad Air could potentially experience even greater sales success moving forward.
ETNews previously stated that Samsung Display will supply its latest M16 OLED panels to Apple and Google. These panels are anticipated to be utilized in upcoming devices like the iPhone Fold and the Galaxy S27 series. Samsung Display remains the primary provider of OLED panels for iPhones, with an estimated supply volume of around 50 million units for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in the latter half of the year, along with approximately 10 million units for the foldable iPhone.
For over two years, Samsung’s M14 OLED panels have been used in devices such as the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, the iPhone 17 series, and the Pixel 10 series. The new M16 panels are expected to offer improved brightness, color, and lifespan. However, for most users, the difference in display quality may be minimal, as the M14 panels already deliver top-notch color accuracy and brightness.
