In a forest clearing in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district, a nine-month mystery was resolved with the discovery of bones, a buried secret, and a confession. Police have uncovered the case of an 18-year-old woman’s disappearance, revealing that her lover enticed her to a secluded location and fatally stabbed her.
The incident has prompted significant disciplinary measures, as 28 police officers have been suspended due to identified shortcomings and suspected misconduct in handling the case.
The victim, Pushpa Kumari from Pindarajora village, was reported missing nearly nine months ago. Her remains were located in the Madhutand forest in Chakulia panchayat after her lover, Dinesh Kumar Mahato, admitted to the crime. Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh disclosed that the pair had been in a relationship for three years, and Dinesh confessed that Pushpa’s insistence on marriage caused him mental distress, leading to his decision to commit the murder.
On the day of the incident, Pushpa had visited Chas College to enroll in a graduate program. Dinesh reportedly met her there and, under the guise of a conversation, took her approximately 1.5 km behind the campus to a desolate forest area, where he carried out the stabbing. Subsequently, he concealed the body in bushes, discarded the blood-stained knife along the road, and fled the scene.
Following Dinesh’s guidance, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) recovered skeletal remains, clothing, hair, bone fragments, and the murder weapon from the location. A review of the investigation revealed that some officers involved had neglected crucial instructions, attempted to undermine the case, and favored the accused. The conduct of these officers was deemed suspicious, with allegations of breaches of confidentiality, potential financial transactions, and other inappropriate activities in support of the suspect.
In response, 28 police officials, including the station house officer of Pindarajora police station, have been suspended pending a departmental inquiry. The senior police official confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
