The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a fine of PKR 20 million on fast bowler Naseem Shah for a social media post that raised questions about the presence of a senior political figure at the opening match of the Pakistan Super League, which kicked off last week without spectators in attendance.
The controversy emerged at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, where Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was present as a state guest during the opening game. Nawaz, alongside other dignitaries, was introduced to officials from all eight franchises and players before the match between Lahore Qalandars and debutant team Hyderabad Kingsmen.
Naseem expressed his views on the event through a now-deleted post on social media platform X, where he questioned the special treatment given to Nawaz, likening it to being treated like royalty at Lord’s. The post was swiftly removed, with Naseem alleging that his account had been compromised.
Following this incident, the PCB promptly took action by issuing a notice to Naseem for breaching his central contract terms, as well as violating the board’s media policy and code of conduct. The 21-year-old tendered an unconditional apology and faced a disciplinary committee comprising three members in Lahore.
In an official statement, the PCB confirmed that Naseem had contravened several clauses of his central contract and had already severed ties with his social media advisor, who will be prohibited from working with any cricketer under the PCB’s jurisdiction.
The episode unfolded amid challenging circumstances for cricket in Pakistan, with the ongoing PSL season being conducted without live audiences due to the wider repercussions of the Iran conflict. Escalating fuel prices and governmental directives have prompted travel restrictions and the promotion of remote work arrangements, leading to the tournament being confined to Lahore and Karachi instead of the initially planned six venues.
This is not the first instance of disciplinary measures being taken in Pakistan cricket related to political expressions. In 2025, all-rounder Aamer Jamal was fined $4,000 for exhibiting a slogan in support of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
On the sporting front, Naseem has faced a tough beginning to the PSL season with his new team Rawalpindi PindiZ, registering figures of 0 for 51 in their recent loss to Peshawar Zalmi. Despite the off-field controversy, Naseem remains a pivotal member of Pakistan’s fast-bowling arsenal, boasting 152 wickets in 20 Tests, 34 ODIs, and 37 T20Is.
