In his annual New Year’s message to the Ukrainian people, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the nation’s desire for an end to the ongoing conflict, emphasizing that Ukraine seeks peace but not at any cost. Zelenskyy, donning a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt, highlighted the exhaustion felt by Ukrainians after enduring nearly four years of war, comparing it to the length of the German occupation during World War II in various Ukrainian cities. Despite weariness, Zelenskyy affirmed Ukraine’s unwavering determination to persevere.
Addressing the nation just before midnight, Zelenskyy emphasized that any peace agreement signed must be robust and not merely prolong the conflict. He stressed the importance of securing a lasting peace that would benefit everyone for years to come, rather than a temporary solution. The President underscored the significance of ongoing diplomatic efforts, including recent discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, which have made significant progress towards a comprehensive peace deal.
Zelenskyy revealed that a peace agreement is close to completion, with only a final 10% remaining to be resolved, a crucial aspect that will determine the future of peace in Ukraine and Europe. The primary obstacle in finalizing the deal revolves around the control of different territories within Ukraine. While Russia currently occupies a portion of Ukrainian territory, disagreements persist over the status of the eastern Donbas region. Zelenskyy dismissed Russian demands for complete withdrawal from the area as deceptive, calling for the maintenance of current battle lines on the map.
During a recent meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Halifax, Zelenskyy received a commitment of an additional $2.5 billion in economic aid for Ukraine. Carney praised Zelenskyy’s leadership and highlighted the potential for a fair and enduring peace under his administration.
