“Rare Lynx Family Sighting in Northwestern Ontario”

Technology"Rare Lynx Family Sighting in Northwestern Ontario"

A group of lynx caught on camera in northwestern Ontario on New Year’s Day unintentionally created a social media buzz. Constable Zack Stubbington of the Armstrong OPP came across the lynx, consisting of an adult and three kittens, crossing the road during his patrol. The video captures Stubbington counting a total of five lynx and expressing amazement at the sight.

The footage was shared on social media and quickly spread widely. Lynx populations in Canada are known to fluctuate in a 10-year cycle based on food availability, according to Brian McLaren, an associate professor at Lakehead University. McLaren explained that lynx sightings are more common when food is abundant, and lynx kittens typically stay with their mothers for about 10 months.

It is uncommon to spot a second adult lynx with a family, with McLaren speculating that the fifth lynx seen could be a female from a previous litter. Stubbington, in an interview with CBC News, mentioned that he often documents wildlife sightings but had not expected such a significant response to this video. His passion for the outdoors and the chance to encounter wildlife were pivotal factors in choosing a career in northern Ontario.

For those contemplating a career with the OPP and sharing a love for nature, Stubbington recommended looking to the north for opportunities.
