Renowned singer Sarah McLachlan made a last-minute decision to cancel her scheduled performances at the Disney+ premiere of the documentary “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” on Sept. 21. McLachlan cited her support for free speech and expressed concerns about the current challenges facing women’s rights, trans and queer rights, and the suppression of free speech. The documentary showcases the history of the iconic music festival she established in 1997.
McLachlan’s announcement came shortly after ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel and his show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” due to controversial remarks he made about MAGA supporters following an incident involving right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Kirk, known for his opposition to transgender rights and fundraising against transgender medical care, had a vocal following. The aftermath of Kirk’s death has seen an increase in support for his views, leading to a backlash against Kimmel and Disney.
Following Kimmel’s suspension, a significant number of subscribers have reportedly been canceling their Disney+ subscriptions, causing the platform’s website to experience crashes and a decline in Disney’s stock value. ABC News Studios, a subsidiary of Disney, is responsible for distributing the “Lilith Fair” documentary in the U.S.
In her address, McLachlan expressed uncertainty about the future but stressed the importance of artists and individuals working towards unity and understanding. She announced the cancellation of surprise performances at the event, emphasizing solidarity in defense of free speech. Although the lineup had not been officially confirmed, sources suggested that McLachlan, Jewel, and possibly Olivia Rodrigo, featured in the documentary, were set to perform.
The documentary “Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is now accessible for streaming on CBC Gem. McLachlan’s decision to forego her performances underscores the significance of standing up for principles of free speech and social justice.
