Students in the animation program at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, are thrilled about the Oscar nominations received by two films created by program graduates. The films, “KPop Demon Hunters” and “Elio,” directed by Maggie Kang and Domee Shi from Toronto, respectively, have both been nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. “KPop Demon Hunters” also received a nomination for Best Original Song for “Golden.”
For fourth-year animation student Phoebe Yeonsu Lee, the success of director Maggie Kang, particularly as a fellow woman of Korean descent, holds significant personal meaning. Lee expressed her excitement, stating that she did not anticipate her culture gaining such widespread recognition and finds Kang’s achievements inspiring, seeing her as a representation of both animation students and Korean-Canadians, instilling in her the belief that she too can reach similar heights.
According to Mario Positano, the program coordinator of Sheridan College’s school of animation, the recent Oscar nominations are a testament to the college’s history of producing renowned filmmakers. Positano highlighted that the program, with over 60 years of legacy, consistently produces alumni who excel in the industry, such as Chris Williams, who won an Oscar for “Big Hero 6” in 2015, and Domee Shi, who won for “Bao” in 2019. Many graduates find opportunities in animation studios across Canada and internationally, working for esteemed companies like Pixar, DreamWorks, and Sony Pictures Animation.
The achievements of filmmakers like Shi and Kang serve as inspiration for current students, motivating them to pursue excellence in their craft. Positano emphasized the program’s commitment to nurturing talent, providing students with the freedom to explore while staying updated on technological advancements and honoring the art form, fostering the belief that each student has the potential to make significant contributions to the industry.
One student, Molly McCutcheon, who relocated from Australia to join Sheridan’s animation program, shared how the storyline and strong female characters in “KPop Demon Hunters” resonated with her. The film portrays a K-pop girl group doubling as demon hunters to safeguard their fans from supernatural threats. McCutcheon expressed her admiration for Sheridan graduates like Kang and Shi, viewing their success as a source of encouragement in her own filmmaking aspirations.
The Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 15 in Los Angeles, where the winners will be announced.
