Toronto is eagerly anticipating the upcoming soccer events scheduled for this summer. However, the city is currently awaiting confirmation of the $97 million in funding for the FIFA World Cup matches, pledged by the Ontario government.
The city’s FIFA secretariat provided an update on the funding and revenue during a meeting with the city’s World Cup subcommittee. The province’s funding agreement is still being negotiated, with the total budget for the six matches amounting to $380 million. Toronto has committed nearly $180 million, the federal government about $104 million, and the remaining funding is expected from the province.
Councillor Paul Ainslie emphasized the importance of the Ontario government fulfilling its funding commitment, highlighting the significant economic benefits that the tournament will bring. FIFA estimates that Toronto stands to gain a positive economic output of $1.3 billion.
Councillor Amber Morley echoed Ainslie’s sentiments, stressing the importance of the province meeting its obligations as a strong partner in hosting the tournament. She emphasized that the taxes generated from visitor spending should serve as an incentive for the government to fulfill its funding promise.
The city had initially anticipated the province’s contribution to be in cash, but part of it will be provided in the form of services such as policing, transportation, and healthcare. Negotiations between the city and the province are ongoing regarding the valuation of these services.
Premier Doug Ford’s office confirmed that the $97 million commitment from the province will include provincial services. Discussions are continuing between Mayor Olivia Chow and the province to ensure that all necessary services are accounted for accurately in the funding agreement.
Should the province’s cash contribution fall short of $97 million, the city will explore alternative funding options or cost-saving measures. Mayor Chow has emphasized that the city cannot exceed its budget for the World Cup, and discussions with the province are ongoing to address any funding shortfalls.
