Toronto FC has strengthened its defense by securing the services of free-agent center back Walker Zimmerman, a two-time MLS Defender of the Year, for the 2027-28 MLS season. The 32-year-old American has accumulated extensive experience in Major League Soccer with stints at FC Dallas, Los Angeles FC, and most recently, Nashville SC. Zimmerman, a five-time MLS Best XI recipient, four-time MLS All-Star, and two-time MLS Defender of the Year, hails from Lawrenceville, Georgia, and has represented the United States in 45 international matches, serving as captain.
In light of Toronto’s decision not to extend the contracts of veteran defenders Kevin Long, Raoul Petretta, and Sigurd Rosted in 2026, the addition of Zimmerman brings much-needed experience to the backline alongside young talents Lazar Stefanović, Zane Monlouis, and Nicksoen Gomis. Furthermore, the departure of veteran goalkeeper Sean Johnson, who has joined D.C. United as a free agent, following the non-exercise of his 2026 contract option, created a void that Zimmerman’s arrival aims to fill.
Zimmerman’s signing follows Toronto’s recent acquisition of Brazilian left back Matheus Pereira from CD Santa Clara, securing the 25-year-old’s services through the 2027-28 MLS season with an option for the following year. Despite finishing outside the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season in 2025, Toronto’s defensive performance improved under the guidance of first-year head coach Robin Fraser, a former double MLS Defender of the Year recipient.
General manager Jason Hernandez is actively seeking a prominent attacker to bolster Toronto’s offensive line, as the team ranked 27th in offense last season, averaging 1.9 goals per game. Zimmerman’s arrival is being hailed as one of the most significant defensive signings for Toronto since Drew Moor’s introduction in 2015, which significantly enhanced the team’s defensive solidity and led to a notable improvement in goals conceded.
Having featured in 307 MLS regular-season and playoff games, Zimmerman has been a linchpin for Nashville SC since their debut season in 2020, showcasing his leadership qualities on and off the field. Despite his impressive track record, Zimmerman’s signing does not fall under the Designated Player category for Toronto, as the club utilized targeted allocation money to secure his services. This strategic move aligns with MLS salary regulations and aims to optimize the team’s roster composition.
Expressing his enthusiasm for joining Toronto FC, Zimmerman emphasized the club’s rich MLS legacy and the opportunity to contribute to its future success. His journey from FC Dallas to Los Angeles FC and then Nashville SC has equipped him with valuable experience and accolades, including the MLS Supporters’ Shield and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title during his time at FC Dallas. The addition of Zimmerman underscores Toronto FC’s commitment to strengthening its defensive capabilities and competing for silverware in the upcoming seasons.
