“Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Canadian Imports amid China Deal Dispute”

Politics"Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Canadian Imports amid China Deal Dispute"

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning of potentially imposing a 100% tariff on all Canadian imports if Canada engages in any agreements with China. This comes shortly after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was interpreted as a response to U.S. actions.

Trump’s recent social media post did not specify the nature of the deal in question. Last week, Canada finalized an arrangement with China to permit 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market at a reduced tariff of 6.1% in exchange for China cutting tariffs on Canadian canola.

In his online message, the U.S. president stated that if Governor Carney intends to turn Canada into a conduit for Chinese goods entering the U.S., he is mistaken. Trump further warned that China could potentially harm Canada’s businesses and way of life.

Following up on his initial post, Trump emphasized that China would not be allowed to dominate Canada. Meanwhile, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc clarified that there is no ongoing pursuit of a free trade deal with China, highlighting the resolution of critical tariff issues instead.

Contrary to his earlier positive remarks on the Canada-China agreement, Trump’s recent statements on social media reflect a change in tone. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Carney has refrained from addressing the media since his return to Canada, following his trip to China, Qatar, and Davos, where he openly criticized Trump.

The escalating tensions between the U.S. and Canada have intensified post-Carney’s Davos speech, where he advocated for a new global order. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick criticized Canada for complaining about its treatment while benefitting from favorable trade terms with the U.S. Trump also rescinded an invitation for Carney to join his “Board of Peace” initiative for Gaza.

In response to Trump’s threats, Canadian ministers and premiers have pushed back, emphasizing Canada’s sovereignty and resilience. Culture Minister Marc Miller acknowledged the seriousness of Trump’s statement but stressed the importance of focusing on what is within their control. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew and B.C. Premier David Eby voiced support for Carney’s stance and Canada’s stance against external pressures.
