Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Halifax before traveling to the U.S. for talks with President Donald Trump regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Carney expressed optimism about achieving a just and lasting peace under Zelenskyy’s leadership and announced an additional $2.5 billion in economic aid for Ukraine.

The aid package includes $1.6 billion in loan guarantees to international financial institutions and funding to support Ukraine through the International Monetary Fund. Zelenskyy updated Carney on diplomatic efforts with the U.S. to resolve the conflict that began with Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022.

Zelenskyy is expected to present a 20-point peace plan to Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s defenses and negotiation process, urging Russia to engage constructively. Carney praised Zelenskyy’s efforts for peace and reiterated Canada’s support in pressuring Russia to negotiate.

Security guarantees and economic agreements will be key topics at the upcoming discussions with Trump. Zelenskyy stated that territorial issues, including the Donbas region, will be addressed. Despite challenges, progress has been made in negotiations, with both sides aiming to finalize details for a comprehensive agreement.

The Kremlin confirmed ongoing dialogues with U.S. representatives following discussions between Russian and American envoys. Both parties expressed willingness to continue the dialogue towards a resolution.
