Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa recently disclosed his decision not to take part in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). Zampa, who was not part of the last year’s mini-auction after being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, cited dissatisfaction with the compensation offered in relation to his skills and the two-month duration of the IPL.
Having played in five IPL seasons, Zampa’s highest earning was in the previous year when he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 2.40 crore in the mega auction. Despite representing four teams since 2016, he has only featured in 22 matches and has not been a regular fixture in any IPL team.
In a statement on the ARY Podcast, Zampa explained, “I opted out of the IPL this season. To be frank, the financial rewards for my skill set are not on par with others, considering the time commitment required for the IPL matches. Therefore, it didn’t seem like a viable option for me to continue playing in the tournament.”
Although absent from the IPL, Zampa is actively participating in the Pakistan Super League 2026, playing for Karachi Kings under the captaincy of David Warner. The franchise secured his services for PKR 4.5 crore, approximately Rs 1.51 crore.
Expressing his enjoyment in the PSL, Zampa stated, “While I was planning to take a break, the PSL opportunity arose about a month ago. The transition happened swiftly, but I am relishing the experience.”
Despite his IPL absence, Zampa still holds the record for the best bowling figures by a spinner in IPL history, achieving a remarkable six-wicket haul in his debut season in 2016 while playing for Rising Pune Supergiants. In the ongoing PSL 2026 season, Zampa has taken three wickets in two matches with an impressive economy rate of 4.62. Additionally, he is Australia’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, boasting 147 wickets from 115 matches.
