Iran’s chief prosecutor disputed U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertions that he prevented the hanging of 800 detained protestors in the country, labeling the claims as untrue. Activists reported that the death toll from the ongoing crackdown on nationwide demonstrations has now climbed to a minimum of 5,032. Concerns persist over the actual number of fatalities as Iran is currently experiencing an extensive internet blackout, surpassing two weeks.
Tensions between the United States and Iran remain heightened as an American aircraft carrier group moves closer to the Middle East, a move Trump likened to an “armada” during recent remarks to the press. While there is speculation that a military buildup could provide Trump with the option of launching strikes, he has refrained from doing so despite repeated warnings to Tehran. Experts suggest that although Trump seems to have backed down on his stance, the continued deployment of military assets in the region indicates the potential for kinetic action.
Iran’s top prosecutor, Mohammad Movahedi, refuted Trump’s claims of halting the execution of 800 detained individuals involved in protests, stating that no such decision had been made by the judiciary. The term “mohareb,” meaning “enemies of God,” has been used by judiciary officials to justify the death penalty for some detainees. Additionally, Volker Türk, the UN high commissioner for human rights, expressed unease over conflicting statements from Iranian authorities regarding the possible execution of those detained in connection with the protests.
In Tehran, Friday prayer leader Mohammad Javad Haji Ali Akbari criticized Trump, describing him as a “yellow-faced, yellow-haired, and disgraced man” who is akin to a barking dog. The latest death toll figures, provided by the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, revealed that among the deceased were 4,716 demonstrators, 203 government-affiliated individuals, 43 children, and 40 civilians not participating in the protests. The agency also reported over 27,600 detentions as part of a widespread arrest campaign by authorities.
Amid these developments, the American military has deployed additional assets to the Middle East, including the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and accompanying warships. Trump mentioned the fleet’s movement towards Iran as a precautionary measure, emphasizing the potential for action if necessary. The U.S. president also referenced previous talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program and issued warnings of military retaliation for any hostile actions.
Efforts to independently verify the death toll have been hindered by Iran’s internet restrictions and communication blockades. The ongoing unrest in Iran has led to a substantial loss of life, prompting international concern and condemnation.
