“Iga Swiatek Taps Rafael Nadal’s Ex-Coach for Comeback”

Sports"Iga Swiatek Taps Rafael Nadal's Ex-Coach for Comeback"

Iga Swiatek swiftly revamped her season following her disappointing performance at the Miami Open by enlisting the help of Francisco Roig, former coach to Rafael Nadal. This strategic move comes after Swiatek’s unexpected early exit in Miami, where she succumbed to a surprising defeat in her opening match of the tournament.

Despite being seeded No. 2, Swiatek was upset in the second round by fellow Polish player Magda Linette, who mounted a comeback to secure a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory. This loss marked the end of Swiatek’s impressive 73-match winning streak in opening rounds, underscoring the rarity and impact of her defeat as a former world No. 1 and Miami Open champion.

In response to her setback, Swiatek has brought on board Francisco Roig, a highly respected figure in tennis coaching circles. The five-time Grand Slam champion officially announced the coaching appointment by sharing a photo with Roig on social media and expressing her excitement for this new chapter.

Following her departure from the Miami Open in March, Swiatek parted ways with her previous coach Wim Fissette in a bid to regain momentum for the upcoming clay-court season. Roig’s addition to her team is seen as a significant asset due to his extensive experience at the top echelons of the sport.

Renowned for his successful tenure with Rafael Nadal, Roig played a crucial role in Nadal’s career from 2005 to 2022, contributing to the Spaniard’s 22 Grand Slam titles, including a record 14 French Open victories, and his extended reign as world No. 1. Interestingly, Roig’s new role follows a brief collaboration with Emma Raducanu, which ended after approximately six months, as confirmed by Raducanu following her exit from the Australian Open in January 2026.

With the clay season approaching rapidly, Swiatek aims to leverage Roig’s expertise and track record to swiftly rebound from her setback in Miami.
