Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine using hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, resulting in at least four fatalities in the capital city. The onslaught, including the firing of the nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile, followed recent progress in discussions between Ukraine and its allies on enhancing defense strategies against further aggression from Moscow in the event of a potential peace agreement. In Kyiv, the attack caused the death of four individuals and left at least 25 others injured, with apartment buildings among the targets. Vital services such as power and heat were disrupted in approximately 6,000 apartment buildings, leaving residents without essential utilities in freezing temperatures.
Municipal authorities swiftly restored power and heat to critical facilities, such as hospitals, using portable boiler units. Additionally, the Qatari Embassy in Kyiv suffered damage during the attack, highlighting the broader impact of the assault on diplomatic premises.
In a separate incident, debris from the Oreshnik missile was identified in Ukraine’s Lviv region, indicating a targeted strike on civilian infrastructure. The missile, fired from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test range, posed a significant threat to the region.
