Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine using hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, resulting in at least four fatalities in the capital city. This attack marked only the second time in the nearly four-year conflict that Russia deployed a new hypersonic missile, striking western Ukraine as a clear warning to Kyiv’s NATO allies.
The onslaught, including the firing of the nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile, followed recent progress in discussions between Ukraine and its allies on enhancing defense strategies against further aggression from Moscow in the event of a potential peace agreement. European leaders criticized the attack as “escalatory and unacceptable,” with the EU’s top diplomat condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s response to diplomacy as “more missiles and destruction.”
The assault coincided with heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington following Russia’s condemnation of the U.S. seizure of an oil tanker in the North Atlantic. Furthermore, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled support for stringent sanctions aimed at economically pressuring Moscow, which has shown no willingness to compromise on its demands regarding Ukraine.
In Kyiv, the attack caused the death of four individuals and left at least 25 others injured, with apartment buildings among the targets. Vital services such as power and heat were disrupted in approximately 6,000 apartment buildings, leaving residents without essential utilities in freezing temperatures.
Municipal authorities swiftly restored power and heat to critical facilities, such as hospitals, using portable boiler units. Additionally, the Qatari Embassy in Kyiv suffered damage during the attack, highlighting the broader impact of the assault on diplomatic premises.
In a separate incident, debris from the Oreshnik missile was identified in Ukraine’s Lviv region, indicating a targeted strike on civilian infrastructure. The missile, fired from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test range, posed a significant threat to the region.
Russia claimed the attack was in retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone strike on one of Putin’s residences, a claim refuted by both Ukraine and the U.S. The Oreshnik missile, known for its destructive capabilities, has raised concerns about the evolving dynamics of warfare and the need for heightened international response measures.
Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, have called for urgent international actions in response to the missile attack, emphasizing the severe threat it poses to European security. The situation has prompted calls for a UN Security Council meeting to address the escalating crisis.
Leaders from various countries, including Britain, France, Germany, and Canada, have denounced the attack, underscoring the urgent need for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic solutions. The assault has further strained relations between Russia and Western allies, with the international community closely monitoring developments in the region.
