TechnologyRockstar Games Confirms Data Breach Ahead of GTA VI Release

Rockstar Games has confirmed a data breach as fans eagerly anticipate the release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI). Cybersecurity researchers reported that a group called ShinyHunters accessed Rockstar’s data through a third-party service. However, Rockstar assured that only a small amount of non-critical company information was compromised, with no impact on the company or its players.

An analytical platform used by Rockstar Games, Anodot, was the target of the attackers seeking to monitor cloud costs and detect irregular spending. The group, ShinyHunters, has set a ransom deadline of April 14, threatening to disclose the data if not met. The potential exposure includes financial records from GTA Online and Red Dead Online, player spending and geographic information, marketing schedules, and agreements with Sony, Microsoft, voice actors, and music labels.

Despite the breach, player data remains secure as there is no evidence of unauthorized access to passwords or payment details. The incident seems confined to corporate data. In terms of the GTA VI release, the game’s initial launch date of May 2026 was postponed by six months, with the new release date confirmed for Thursday, November 19, 2026, on consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PC release is expected later.

With the successful history of GTA V, which sold over 200 million copies worldwide, expectations are high for GTA VI. The upcoming game is projected to offer an enhanced gaming experience, catering to current-generation consoles, and the excitement among Grand Theft Auto fans is palpable as they await the next installment in the series.
