European Green Party co-chair Ciarán Cuffe recently spoke out in support of Budapest Mayor Gergely Karacsony, who is facing criminal charges for organizing the city’s Pride parade last year in defiance of Hungarian law. Despite being investigated by the police, Karacsony remains resolute and proud of his actions, expressing that standing up for freedom comes at a price in Hungary.
The Pride parade in Budapest, which saw hundreds of thousands of participants, was hailed as an empowering experience by Cuffe. He emphasized the significance of the event in a country where freedom of expression has been restricted, highlighting the importance of such demonstrations in the face of oppressive laws.
Karacsony’s defiance of the ban on the Pride march led to him being charged for organizing an unlawful assembly, despite his attempts to circumvent the restrictions by registering it as a municipal event.
