Vaishnavi Adkar has achieved significant success in the realm of Indian women’s tennis by securing the top spot in singles rankings for 2026. Originating from Pune, the 21-year-old has garnered attention for her exceptional performances on the ITF circuit, propelling her up the rankings through a series of remarkable displays.
At the beginning of the year, Vaishnavi held the 643rd position globally but has since advanced to the 383rd spot in the latest WTA rankings, surpassing Sahaja Yamalapalli at 384 to claim the title of India’s leading women’s singles player. Following her are Vaidehi Chaudhari and Shrivalli Bhamidipathy in the third and fourth positions among Indian players, respectively.
Currently, Vaishnavi is representing India in the 2026 Asia/Oceania Group I campaign of the Billie Jean King Cup in New Delhi. Her recent success on the ITF circuit has led to her selection for this prestigious team event, where she stands as India’s top-ranked women’s singles player, expected to play a pivotal role alongside Sahaja Yamalapalli in the singles matches, while Ankita Raina and Rutuja Bhosale are set to handle the doubles responsibilities.
The Indian squad for the competition features Vaishnavi Adkar, Sahaja Yamalapalli, Ankita Raina, Rutuja Bhosale, and Zeel Desai, with Zeel stepping in due to injuries to Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Vaidehee Chaudhari.
Vaishnavi Adkar’s remarkable journey in 2026 was marked by standout performances in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi. Notably, she became the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2009 to reach a W100 final in Bengaluru, showcasing her growing prominence in the ITF circuit.
Subsequently, in Kalaburagi, Vaishnavi claimed the singles title, earning USD 4,860 in prize money. Seeded third, she defeated Ankita Raina 7-6(3), 6-4 in an all-Indian final on March 8, demonstrating composure and skill throughout the match.
Her victories included a semifinal win over top seed Jasmijn Gimbrere, ranked 399th globally, with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2. Additionally, Vaishnavi and Ankita secured the doubles title in Kalaburagi with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Soha Sadiq and Akanksha Nitture.
