The European Union has introduced a novel method to ensure minors stay away from social media. It has launched a new application for age verification that aims to enhance online safety for children by accurately confirming users’ ages. This development follows actions taken by some nations like Australia, which have prohibited individuals under the age of 16 from accessing social platforms. Unlike the traditional age-gating systems that rely on self-certification by users claiming to be over 18, this new app demands authentic documentation for verification, setting a new benchmark for age verification technology.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the app adheres to the highest privacy standards globally and functions seamlessly on all devices. It boasts user-friendliness and is completely open source. “Online platforms can now easily integrate our age verification app, eliminating any excuses. Europe presents a free and user-friendly solution to safeguard our children from harmful and illicit content,” she stated on April 15.
The app operates differently from existing age verification methods. While current systems require users to simply click a box to self-certify their age as above 18, the new app mandates users to present valid identification, such as a passport, during setup. It is compatible with smartphones, tablets, and PCs, offering a centralized, EU-backed tool for data security. The app is accessible on Android and iOS mobile devices, necessitating a Google or Apple account and reportedly lacking support for de-Googled Android, desktops, or other platforms.
In terms of its impact on India, no official ban on social media for minors under 16 currently exists in the country. However, several state governments, including Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, have proposed such restrictions. This new application could provide governments with an innovative strategy to prevent children from accessing social media by accurately determining their ages. In jurisdictions like Australia, where social media access for individuals under 16 is prohibited, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are obliged to take appropriate measures, such as account removal, to prevent underage users from maintaining accounts.
In essence, platforms bear the responsibility of verifying users’ ages. They currently employ various indicators, including user search histories and interaction patterns with posts, to estimate users’ ages. The new app shifts the verification burden onto users and offers a direct and precise age verification method. Nonetheless, this app may not be entirely unfamiliar to India, as the country already utilizes the MeriPehchaan app, which leverages users’ Aadhaar credentials for verifying identity details like name, age, and biometrics.
