In a recent podcast with Ranveer Allahbadia, former England skipper Kevin Pietersen disclosed that his disagreement with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) concerning his involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) significantly impacted his international cricket career. Pietersen highlighted that his firm support for franchise cricket during a time when it was not widely accepted had personal repercussions but set a precedent for future players to manage both international commitments and lucrative T20 leagues.
Addressing the backlash he faced, Pietersen emphasized, “I made significant sacrifices and faced the end of my career because of it. It was the primary reason for the opposition I encountered within the establishment.” The rift between Pietersen and the ECB escalated in 2009 when he opted to join Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, prioritizing league cricket over his national duties, amidst existing tensions with then-coach Peter Moores.
Reflecting on his truncated international career, Pietersen lamented, “When my England journey concluded at the age of 33 after 104 Test matches, I believe I should have played 150–160 Tests and amassed 12,000–13,000 runs.” Despite the challenges, Pietersen amassed 8,181 runs in Test cricket at an average of 47.3, comprising 35 half-centuries and 23 centuries.
The clash between Pietersen and the ECB, a significant figure in modern English cricket, garnered widespread attention. Pietersen recalled the intense scrutiny he faced, stating, “The ECB utilized The Telegraph to target me… I prefer not to delve deeply into it. It was extensively covered, but I now lead a content and harmonious life.”
Following his stint with various IPL franchises including Delhi Daredevils and Rising Pune Supergiant, Pietersen was recently appointed as a mentor for the Delhi Capitals team in the 2025 season.
