The inauguration of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been postponed at the request of the United States, Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed on Thursday. Following the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority’s decision to delay a scheduled ribbon-cutting ceremony, Carney mentioned that there were some concerns raised.
Carney informed reporters during an event introducing a food security strategy that the United States had requested the opening delay to address certain outstanding issues. He emphasized the importance of taking the time needed to resolve these issues to ensure the long-term service of the bridge to Canadians, Americans, and others.
The Prime Minister highlighted that discussions with the United States are underway to address technical aspects that have been raised. This postponement follows statements from a White House official affirming U.S. President Donald Trump’s unchanged stance on the bridge.
Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian federal minister for Canada-U.S. trade, expressed optimism in resolving the remaining issues swiftly to proceed with the bridge’s opening. LeBlanc mentioned ongoing conversations with the state of Michigan and collaborative efforts between Canadian and U.S. ambassadors towards this goal.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens acknowledged the delay, attributing it to the current trade climate affected by Trump’s trade policies with Canada. Dilkens urged patience in securing a favorable trade deal with the United States, which would enhance the necessity for an additional bridge.
The bridge, funded entirely by the Canadian federal government at $6.4 billion, employed workers and resources from both Canada and the U.S. Stephen Laskowski, President and CEO of the Ontario Trucking Association, expressed disappointment over the delay, highlighting the potential benefits the new bridge would bring to the trucking industry.
Former Ontario deputy premier Dwight Duncan, not surprised by the delay, emphasized the need to address broader cross-border trade issues before the bridge’s opening. He criticized the delay as an unnecessary setback caused by dealing with an unpredictable partner in the U.S.
Despite the postponement, enthusiasm remains high among supporters of the Gordie Howe Bridge, with Murray Howe, son of Gordie Howe, expressing resilience and patience as they navigate through the delay.
