Google has released the fourth beta version of Android 17, moving closer to the final launch of its next operating system. Although there are no major visible changes, the latest update hints at potential new hardware features for the upcoming Pixel 11 series.

Reported by Android Authority, a new feature named Pixel Glow has emerged in the beta release, evolving from its earlier version known as “Light animations” (codenamed “Orbit”) in Beta 2. Pixel Glow seems to be a subtle lighting system designed to provide visual feedback through colors and light, especially when the phone is face down. Essentially, it could enable the device to alert or respond to actions without activating the screen.

References in the code suggest that Pixel Glow could offer various interactions, such as lighting up for calls from preferred contacts or providing visual cues during hands-free operations. It might also collaborate with Gemini to deliver light-based responses during AI interactions, enhancing user engagement with the assistant.

Interestingly, Pixel Glow appears to be an alternative to Flash Notifications introduced in Android 14. Unlike Flash Notifications, which rely on the screen or camera flash, this new system seems to require dedicated lighting hardware. A crucial line in the code mentions that “the device must have hardware lights,” indicating a deeper integration beyond mere software adjustments.

The question arises: where are these lights located? The current Pixel 11 renders do not reveal any additional lighting beyond the standard camera flash. However, considering that CAD-based leaks often overlook internal components, it’s plausible that the lighting system could be discreetly integrated, possibly within the camera bar or beneath the chassis.

Several details about Pixel Glow remain unclear at this stage. It is uncertain whether the system will utilize full RGB lighting or a more minimalist approach, and its inclusion in the final release is not confirmed. Nevertheless, its presence strongly suggests that Google is exploring innovative ways to merge hardware, software, and AI to enhance the interactive smartphone experience.

For now, Pixel Glow serves as an intriguing early glimpse into the potential future of Pixel devices.
