The strike commenced at 12:01 AM on Monday following unsuccessful mediated discussions on Sunday. LUFA President Fabrice Colin emphasized the significant sacrifices made to sustain Laurentian University during its financial turmoil, including job losses, pension plan alterations, wage reductions, and increased workloads.
In response to the strike, the university expressed disappointment, acknowledging the emotional impact of these events. Although the campus remains operational, all classes are temporarily suspended. The university stated that its proposed offer is equitable, reasonable, and sustainable given the circumstances. Students at Laurentian University have expressed concerns regarding the strike. Prior to the strike’s official commencement, some students demonstrated support for the faculty. Kiandra Holmes, a student organizer, highlighted the importance of fair compensation for faculty members and their role in inspiring student learning experiences. Other students, like Kailin Kohls, praised the dedication of professors and expressed gratitude for their support during their academic journeys.
Holmes and Kohls, both fourth-year students, are apprehensive about the strike’s impact on their academic progress and future plans. Holmes, an education student, fears for her required placement, while Kohls, who has a job lined up post-graduation, anticipates disruptions to her schedule and future pursuits. They emphasized the ripple effect the strike may have on various aspects of their lives beyond academics.
