Mayor Scott Gillingham has expressed his desire for peace to be restored in Minneapolis, Winnipeg’s sister city. Recent events in Minneapolis, including the presence of armed U.S. immigration agents leading to protests and allegations of civil rights violations, such as the tragic death of Renee Good on January 7, have deeply concerned Gillingham.
Having virtually met Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in early 2025, Gillingham conveyed his support to Frey through a text message. Reflecting on the challenging situation in Minneapolis, Gillingham acknowledged the difficulties faced by Mayor Frey, emphasizing the unprecedented and unsettling times in both countries.
During their previous conversation 11 months ago, Gillingham and Frey discussed the U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports, which was a significant concern at that time. Gillingham remarked on the escalating global uncertainties since then, underscoring the unexpected turn of events that have unfolded.
The mayor’s sentiments align with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Carney highlighted the diminishing international rules-based order. Gillingham commended Carney’s speech for shedding light on the evolving global landscape, emphasizing the need for unity among like-minded nations to uphold shared values of freedom, equality, and opportunity.
Addressing the ongoing chaos and challenges, Gillingham stressed the importance of solidarity and mutual support at all levels of government to safeguard cities, nations, and businesses affected by tariffs. He emphasized the absence of a clear guide to navigate through turbulent times, noting the disruptive nature of the leadership style witnessed in the U.S.
In response to the uncertain future, Gillingham has initiated discussions with his team to prepare Winnipeg for potential scenarios that were once unimaginable, such as an influx of U.S. residents seeking refuge in Canada or the need to assist the families of Winnipeg-based military personnel during deployments. This proactive approach aims to ensure the city is well-equipped to handle any unforeseen challenges that may arise.
Drawing on Carney’s remarks about the current global shift, Gillingham emphasized the importance of readiness and vigilance as they monitor developments worldwide. The focus remains on adapting to the changing landscape and preparing for any eventualities that may impact the city and its residents.
