President Donald Trump is contemplating the possibility of withdrawing some American troops from Europe due to dissatisfaction with NATO allies’ response to the Iran conflict and stalled efforts regarding Greenland. A senior White House official revealed to Reuters that Trump, displeased with NATO’s lack of assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz and frustrated by the lack of progress in acquiring Greenland, has discussed the option of pulling troops from the continent with his advisors.
Although no final decision has been reached, the White House has not yet tasked the Pentagon with developing concrete withdrawal plans. However, the mere presence of internal discussions indicates a significant deterioration in the relationship between Washington and its European partners.
The issue arises at a time when NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte recently visited the White House, but the meeting seems to have had little impact on repairing the strained relations, which officials describe as the most tense since the alliance’s establishment in 1949.
Currently, the United States maintains over 80,000 troops stationed across Europe, a key component of the continent’s security structure since World War Two. Germany hosts the largest contingent with more than 30,000 troops, supported by substantial deployments in Italy, the United Kingdom, and Spain.
Trump’s frustration has been mounting for months, with his longstanding criticism of European allies for insufficient defense spending intensifying since the onset of the Iran conflict. The president has expressed disappointment that NATO nations did not step up to assist in reopening the critical global energy pathway, the Strait of Hormuz, which remains disrupted despite a fragile ceasefire.
Simultaneously, Trump’s efforts to assert dominance over Greenland, a Danish territory, have added strain to transatlantic relations, prompting concerns in European capitals.
While Nato diplomats acknowledge the lack of clarity from the United States on allies’ roles in Hormuz operations and the specific contributions each country should make, reports suggesting troop repositioning based on political alignment have surfaced. The White House official clarified to Reuters that Trump’s discussions have primarily focused on bringing troops back to the United States rather than relocating them within Europe.
