The Jacques-Cartier Bridge in Montreal has resumed traffic with two lanes open in each direction following a temporary closure due to a fire incident. The closure, which lasted several hours, caused significant traffic congestion during the morning rush hour on the South Shore.
Although most lanes on the bridge have reopened, the exit lane toward De Lorimier Avenue south remains closed as of Thursday morning. Additionally, the multipurpose path and sidewalk in both directions are still inaccessible.
While the fire did not directly impact the bridge’s structure, concerns were raised about the safety of the vacant industrial building at 1600 De Lorimier Ave. and the billboards on its roof. To address these concerns, the building has been demolished.
Over 120 firefighters were deployed to combat the four-alarm fire that started around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. By noon the following day, the fire was successfully brought under control. The Montreal police are now investigating the incident to determine the cause, with uncertainties about potential occupants in the building.
The building, constructed in 1910, has a historical significance and was slated for redevelopment by the Bertone Development Corporation. Plans for the site aimed to integrate the heritage building into a new project for the area. However, the project is currently on hold pending further assessments by authorities.
Recent discussions between developers and the Ville-Marie borough intended to incorporate the heritage building into the new Quartier des lumières neighborhood. The federal government had previously pledged $108 million towards a 304-unit project in the area through its Apartment Construction Loan Program.
