The latest FIFA rankings show that the Canadian men’s national team has slipped two spots to No. 29. This drop occurred despite not participating in any Tier 1 international matches since the previous rankings were published. Nigeria (No. 26, up 12) and Algeria (No. 28, up six) surpassed Canada due to their performances at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Canada’s most recent game was a 1-0 victory over Guatemala in a B international match in Los Angeles, which did not impact their FIFA ranking. The top seven in the rankings remained unchanged, with Spain leading the list followed by Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
Senegal, the winner of the AFCON, climbed seven places to No. 12. Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea experienced the biggest drop, falling 10 places to No. 107. The U.S. and Mexico also slipped in the rankings, landing at No. 15 and No. 16, respectively. Panama (No. 33, down three) and Costa Rica (No. 51, down two) were ranked below Canada.
In their upcoming fixtures, Canada is set to face Uzbekistan on June 1 in a friendly match in Edmonton. Reports suggest that Canada will play against Tunisia (No. 47, down six) and Iceland (No. 74, unchanged) in the March international window. Additionally, Canada is scheduled to compete against Switzerland (No. 18, down one) and Qatar (No. 56, down two) in Group B at the upcoming World Cup.
Canada’s all-time highest ranking was No. 26 in September, with the team previously dropping as low as No. 122 in August and September 2014.
