EPFO Introduces Measure to Rectify Inaccurate Member IDs

BusinessEPFO Introduces Measure to Rectify Inaccurate Member IDs

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has prolonged a significant feature enabling members to rectify inaccurate Member IDs (MIDs) associated with their Universal Account Number (UAN). This initiative aims to assist employees in resolving issues arising from the creation of multiple or incorrect member IDs, sometimes unbeknownst to them.

In a circular dated April 13, 2026, EPFO announced that the updated regulation will encompass scenarios where contributions have already been made under such erroneous MIDs.

Formerly, the option to unlink Member IDs was confined to specific circumstances. However, EPFO has broadened the scope to encompass instances where erroneous MIDs exist, regardless of the presence of contributions in them.

Nevertheless, EPFO has imposed restrictions. Delinking of Member IDs will not be permitted if claims have been processed, settled, or are pending. This limitation also applies if contributions have been received more than six times in a particular Member ID.

EPFO specified that separate directives will be issued later regarding the management of balances in delinked accounts, including the potential transfer to Suspense Reserve Funds.

The delinking process initiates on the EPFO member portal, where an employee can log in using their UAN and password to review their service history, displaying all linked Member IDs.

Upon discovering an incorrect or unwanted Member ID, a member can submit a delinking request through the portal, which is then forwarded to the employer for approval. If the employer consents, and contributions have been received no more than twice in that Member ID, the delinking process occurs at the employer level.

In cases where the employer rejects the request or fails to respond within two weeks, the matter is escalated to the Regional Office. This escalation also applies when contributions have been received between two to six times. The Regional Office conducts a thorough examination before forwarding the case to senior officials for final approval or rejection, with clear reasons documented for the decision.

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit identification number issued by EPFO to every salaried employee, facilitating the consolidation of multiple provident fund accounts from different employments. Member IDs are assigned by employers upon an employee’s recruitment, and multiple IDs can become linked to a single UAN due to job transitions or administrative oversights.

This development is crucial for employees as it is anticipated to alleviate confusion stemming from duplicate or inaccurate provident fund accounts. It empowers employees to manage their PF records effectively, ensuring that contributions are correctly aligned with their active work history.

EPFO has announced that further guidelines will be released soon concerning the transfer or management of balances from delinked accounts.
