Goldie Singh, known as Sona Singh, a social media influencer with approximately 20,000 followers, officially entered the race for the upcoming Surat Municipal Corporation election as a candidate representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The AAP aims to bring a positive transformation to Gujarat’s political scene by nominating common individuals for the municipal elections scheduled statewide.

Being fielded by the Arvind Kejriwal-led party from Surat’s ward number 29, the microinfluencer has garnered recognition on social platforms for her dance performances and expressive content. Supported by her followers, she submitted her nomination pledging to tackle critical civic issues like contaminated drinking water in her community if she secures victory.

In an interview with India Today, Singh shared her social media journey spanning five years and her recent affiliation with the AAP. She expressed delight at the chance to participate in the local elections and outlined her plans to kickstart her campaign promptly.

Singh emphasized the challenges faced by residents in her locality, especially those from lower-income backgrounds. She highlighted issues such as poor drainage systems, sewage overflow, deteriorating road conditions, and the absence of clean water, stressing the urgent need for these concerns to be addressed for public health and disease prevention.

Furthermore, Singh voiced concerns about the hardships faced by street vendors selling items like pani puri and vegetables. She pointed out the financial losses incurred when municipal authorities seize their carts, leading to spoiled goods and prolonged hardships for the vendors.

Confident in the public’s trust, Singh declared that she believes “101% of the public trusts her,” attributing her decision to run for office to the encouragement received from her supporters and subscribers, motivating her to serve society and the nation.

Planning to conduct a door-to-door campaign to engage directly with residents and understand their challenges, Singh aims to develop solutions for their grievances. The voting for the 120 seats of the Surat Municipal Corporation is set for April 26, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) having maintained control of the civic body for over three decades.
