During a lengthy speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump laid out his case for U.S. control of Greenland. However, within hours of his speech, Trump renounced his previous claims, stating that he had established a potential future agreement regarding Greenland and the entire Arctic Region following a brief meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
While details of the agreement remain vague, it is evident that Denmark will not be handing over Greenland to the U.S. Trump also announced that he would not be imposing tariffs on Denmark and other European NATO allies who supported Denmark’s refusal to relinquish Greenland.
Trump’s decision to abandon the pursuit of U.S. ownership of Greenland came after he declared in his Davos speech that military force would not be used to acquire the island. Danish European Parliament member Anders Vistisen criticized Trump’s arguments for control of Greenland, labeling them as false rhetoric and lies about the Arctic region.
