Huawei Unveils Smart Glasses to Challenge Meta’s Dominance

TechnologyHuawei Unveils Smart Glasses to Challenge Meta's Dominance

While Meta Platforms maintains its leading position in the smart glasses market, competition is intensifying. Apple, Google, and Samsung are expected to join the competition soon. Huawei, based in Shenzhen, has unveiled its inaugural smart glasses with an integrated camera, positioning itself as a direct competitor to Ray-Ban’s Meta Smart Glasses.

Features of Huawei’s Smart Glasses

Huawei’s latest smart glasses run on the company’s proprietary chipset and boast a 12-megapixel camera. These glasses can take photos, record POV videos, support live streaming, and enable first-person video calls. In addition to imaging capabilities, the glasses are equipped with advanced AI functionalities. He Gang, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business, mentioned that the glasses can facilitate payments through QR code scanning, estimate food calories, and offer translation and voice assistant services.

Huawei aims to differentiate its smart glasses with a claim of strong battery life, promising up to nine hours of continuous music playback compared to Meta Platforms’ rival device, which offers around five hours. This endurance advantage on paper positions Huawei favorably, although real-world performance remains to be confirmed.

Initially promoted as a lightweight design at 35g, a report by Gizmodo pointed out that this weight excludes the lenses. When factoring in the lenses, the glasses weigh approximately 47g, slightly lighter than Meta Platforms’ offering ranging between 50g and 53g.

The smart glasses are available in three finishes: Silver Grey, Shimmery Silver, and Modern Black, offered in both round and square frame designs.

Priced at 2,499 yuan (around Rs 34,239), Huawei’s smart glasses directly compete with Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 AI glasses starting at about $379 (approximately Rs 35,400).

During the launch event on Monday, Huawei also introduced new handsets in its mid-range flagship Pura 90 series, with prices starting at 4,699 yuan (approximately Rs 64,380), matching the predecessor’s price from last June. The new Huawei AI Glasses are now in the pre-sale phase, with official sales commencing on April 25.
