Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a high-level security meeting with bank leaders to discuss potential cybersecurity risks linked to Anthropic’s Claude Mythos AI model, touted as the most advanced in cybersecurity. The Ministry of Finance emphasized the unprecedented threat posed by Mythos, stressing the need for heightened vigilance and coordination among financial institutions and banks. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also attended the meeting.
Claude Mythos, Anthropic’s powerful AI model, has uncovered numerous cybersecurity vulnerabilities undetected by humans, including long-standing flaws in operating systems and web browsers. Restricted to a select group of about 40 companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, Mythos’ capabilities have raised concerns about unauthorized access and potential exploitation of security loopholes.
The Indian government, along with the US government, is closely monitoring Mythos, with discussions held to enhance cybersecurity measures. To address the perceived risks associated with Mythos, the finance ministry plans to establish a framework for identifying and responding to potential threats. Banks have been advised to bolster their IT systems, enhance customer data security, and collaborate with cybersecurity experts to fortify defenses against cyber threats.
The finance ministry, in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India, is assessing the risks posed by Mythos to the Indian financial sector. Measures are being put in place to facilitate real-time threat intelligence sharing among banks, Indian CERT, and relevant agencies to enhance the cybersecurity landscape in India. Nirmala Sitharaman has urged the Indian Banks’ Association to develop a coordinated response mechanism to swiftly address any cybersecurity threats that may arise.
