“Calgary octogenarian educator faces new sex assault charges”

National"Calgary octogenarian educator faces new sex assault charges"

For the second time within a year, an octogenarian former educator from Calgary is facing historical sexual assault charges. Fred Archer, aged 81, is now confronting two fresh charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation involving a single male complainant during the years 1985 to 1986, as per court documents.

These recent allegations coincide with the finalization of a $15-million class-action lawsuit involving approximately 40 individuals who claim they were victims of abuse by Archer or another former teacher at John Ware Junior High School. RCMP representative Gina Slaney has confirmed that the latest accusations stem from Archer’s tenure at Springbank Middle School, where he served as a guidance counselor in the 1980s and 1990s prior to his time at John Ware.

Timothy Dunlap, the defense attorney for Archer, has stated that despite not yet having access to disclosure, his client is gearing up to contest the charges. Dunlap relayed Archer’s firm denial of the allegations, emphasizing his client’s readiness to fight them.

Expressing unease about the timing of the recent claims, Dunlap raised concerns about the potential influence of the substantial settlement in prompting individuals to come forward with allegations. He suggested that the allure of financial compensation might be a factor in encouraging people to step forward with accusations, portraying his client as a minor figure caught in a larger legal and financial web.

Archer, who has a history of previous convictions, previously served a three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2009 to two counts of sexual assault and one count of gross indecency. During a parole hearing the following year, Archer acknowledged the possibility of additional victims emerging, indicating his willingness to face any further charges and subsequent incarceration.

The lawsuit, initially filed in 2021 against the Calgary Board of Education and former teacher Michael Gregory from John Ware, who later died by suicide after facing numerous sexual assault and exploitation charges, was expanded in 2024 to include Archer. Allegations within the lawsuit suggest collusion between Gregory and Archer, with accusations of the education board’s failure to safeguard students despite being aware of the misconduct.

In January 2025, Archer was hit with five criminal charges, including sexual assault, sexual interference, and invitation to sexual touching, stemming from incidents involving two 12-year-old students at John Ware. A trial for these charges is scheduled to occur this summer.
