Chennai Super Kings’ rising star Ayush Mhatre shared insights on the impactful mentorship he received from the iconic captain MS Dhoni, emphasizing how Dhoni’s guidance influenced his leadership style while leading the Indian U-19 team. Mhatre, who recently steered India to victory at the U-19 World Cup, credited his time with CSK during the IPL 2025 season for shaping his development as a young leader.
In a video released by the Indian Premier League on April 14, the 18-year-old talent expressed gratitude for the invaluable advice he gained while being part of the Chennai Super Kings squad. Prior to captaining India in the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup, Mhatre sought Dhoni’s counsel on managing the pressures of leadership at a high level.
Reflecting on their conversation, Mhatre revealed, “I discussed captaincy with him post IPL, my first experience in leading. He emphasized the importance of staying composed on the field and avoiding hasty decisions. Despite challenging moments, particularly during rival partnerships, maintaining composure allows for better decision-making.”
Implementing Dhoni’s ‘stay calm’ philosophy, Mhatre’s stellar performances in the tournament culminated in India clinching their sixth U-19 World Cup title with a resounding 100-run triumph over England in the final on February 6, 2026. Leading by example, he delivered crucial contributions, including a notable 62 in the semifinal against Afghanistan and a pivotal 53 in the final alongside Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s remarkable 175.
Demonstrating proficiency with the ball, Mhatre showcased his skill by claiming seven wickets at an impressive average of 12.42, including a notable three-wicket haul against Pakistan. Throughout the competition spanning Zimbabwe and Namibia, under Mhatre’s captaincy, India maintained an unbeaten record, exhibiting poise and strategic acumen reminiscent of Dhoni’s leadership style.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni remains a guiding force within the Chennai Super Kings camp, offering mentorship to emerging talents despite ongoing fitness challenges. Although sidelined from on-field action in the current IPL season due to injury, Dhoni’s off-field presence continues to hold significance.
As Chennai Super Kings encounter early-season struggles with just one victory in four matches, fans eagerly anticipate Dhoni’s potential return for the upcoming fixtures.
