R Vaishali experienced a highly emotional moment with her family following her victory at the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament in Cyprus on April 15. By clinching the title, she made history as the first Indian to do so and secured a chance to compete in the World Championship later this year.
Joined by her brother R Praggnanandhaa and mother Nagalakshmi, Vaishali was showered with applause and pride, creating a heartwarming celebration that symbolized years of belief and a remarkable triumph.
For R Praggnanandhaa, the celebrations were tinged with mixed emotions after facing challenges during the tournament. Despite a strong start with a win over Anish Giri, he struggled to maintain momentum, resulting in significant defeats, including a crucial loss to Javokhir Sindarov. This led to an 11-game winless streak, placing him near the bottom of the leaderboard with five points after 12 rounds.
Vaishali shared a moment with her brother, Praggnanandhaa, who mentioned feeling positive after a key move in the game. This interaction highlighted their bond and support for each other during the tournament.
Vaishali’s victory sets the stage for a World Championship showdown against Ju Wenjun, a dominant force in women’s chess with five championship titles. The highly anticipated match, offering a prize purse of €300,000, is expected to attract global attention.
Vaishali’s path to winning the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament was characterized by resilience and consistent performance rather than early dominance. Initially trailing behind in the standings alongside Divya Deshmukh and Tan Zhongyi, Vaishali staged a gradual comeback by leveraging her opponents’ mistakes and maintaining her position within striking distance.
In the final round, Vaishali found herself in a three-way battle for the title, tied at the top with Bibisara Assaubayeva while closely followed by Zhu Jiner. With a strategic match against Kateryna Lagno, Vaishali needed to match Assaubayeva’s performance. Support from Divya, who held Assaubayeva to a draw in an adjacent game, proved crucial in securing the title for Vaishali.
Maintaining her composure and delivering a controlled performance, Vaishali outplayed Lagno to claim the title. Her success was a result of strategic victories against top players like Lagno, Aleksandra Goryachkina, and Tan, coupled with crucial draws against experienced opponents such as Anna Muzychuk.
Despite setbacks against Zhu Jiner, Vaishali demonstrated resilience and composure, ultimately emerging victorious over a field of seasoned competitors. Her triumph underscores the significance of patience, nerve, and consistent performance in high-pressure situations.
