“Unifor Starts Talks with GM for New Labor Deal”

Business"Unifor Starts Talks with GM for New Labor Deal"

Unifor and General Motors have initiated discussions for a new labor agreement, commencing negotiations at a bargaining table in downtown Toronto on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members across various Ontario GM facilities, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock.

At the outset of the talks, Unifor national president Lana Payne and Jack Uppal, president and managing director at GM Canada, exchanged handshakes to signify the start of the discussions. The negotiation room was set with chairs arranged in a manner where officials positioned themselves at opposite ends, with Payne seated in the middle and Uppal directly across from her.

In a press release on Monday, Payne mentioned, “We’re commencing this phase of negotiations with a strong foundation set by the pattern agreement with Ford, aiming to engage in substantive conversations regarding company operations and the future of automotive jobs at GM in Canada.” Unifor has set a target deadline of August 21 to achieve a preliminary agreement with GM.

Uppal expressed in a news release on Monday the company’s approach to negotiations with “deep respect for the collective bargaining process” and recognizing the crucial role played by its employees in its success. He stated, “Since 2020, we have invested $3.3 billion in our Canadian manufacturing facilities, facilitating the development of next-generation products that will safeguard thousands of Canadian jobs in the years ahead. Our objective is to reach a mutually advantageous agreement that supports our employees while ensuring GM Canada’s competitiveness in the long run.”

In a separate development, Unifor members recently approved a new three-year contract with Ford, which includes annual pay increases of three percent. The agreement, effective from September 21, also encompasses a renewal of a no-closure commitment and program commitments at all Ford sites, such as the introduction of a third shift at its engine plant in Essex, Ont., projected for 2029.

Moreover, Unifor and Ford agreed to implement a program providing a pathway to full employment by July 2027 for laid-off workers from Ford’s Oakville assembly plant. This agreement with Ford was regarded as a successful precedent-setting negotiation by the union.

As the negotiations progress, challenges faced by the automotive sector, including U.S. tariffs, trade uncertainties, and the influx of Chinese electric vehicles into Canada, have been underscored by the union. The talks between Unifor and the remaining Detroit Three automakers come amidst a complex landscape for the industry, with General Motors’ Ingersoll assembly plant and Stellantis’ Brampton assembly plant currently inactive and several workers laid off. The upcoming negotiations with General Motors and Stellantis are expected to be challenging, given the unique circumstances surrounding each company’s decisions over the past 18 months.
