Residents of Star Blanket Cree Nation had a remarkable experience as they welcomed a herd of bison back to their lands over the recent May long weekend. This event marked a significant moment for the community located about 100 kilometers northeast of Regina.
Sharon Strongarm, who witnessed the bison’s arrival with her grandchildren, expressed the emotional significance of the occasion. She described the moment as deeply spiritual, emphasizing the importance of reintroducing the buffalo to their territory.
Ariane Starblanket, the community navigator and project manager for the bison release, highlighted the legacy of her late grandfather, a former chief of Star Blanket, who had envisioned the return of the buffalo as a means of healing and promoting food sovereignty within the community.
The initiative to reintroduce the bison to the region not only focuses on cultural restoration but also aims to engage youth in caring for the animals. Starblanket stressed the importance of involving young individuals in the project to foster a connection to the land and heritage.
Tristan Starr-Desnomie, one of the selected bison keepers, expressed his honor and excitement for this responsibility. As someone experienced in caring for livestock, he acknowledged the unique challenges and rewards that come with looking after the bison.
Looking ahead, the community plans to expand the bison’s habitat with the goal of eventually utilizing the animals for food, clothing, and medicine. This venture not only serves as an educational opportunity but also holds the promise of empowering future generations within the Star Blanket Cree Nation.
