BusinessAir India CEO Campbell Wilson Resigns

Air India’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson, has officially resigned, marking a significant change in leadership at the Tata Group-owned airline. Wilson had informed Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran of his decision to step down back in 2024, with an official resignation set for 2026. He is actively working to ensure a smooth transition and will remain in his position until a successor is appointed.

Reflecting on his time at Air India, Wilson noted the substantial changes that have taken place since the airline’s privatization. He mentioned the successful merger of four airlines, a shift from public to private sector practices, and an overhaul of the leadership team, workforce, and operational practices. The airline has also undergone significant modernization efforts, including the introduction of new products and the addition of over 100 aircraft to its fleet.

Wilson highlighted the completion of interior upgrades for legacy narrowbody aircraft and the ongoing deliveries of widebody aircraft with new custom-designed interiors. He also mentioned the establishment of key infrastructure such as a training academy, simulator facilities, a flying school, and a maintenance repair and overhaul base to support future growth.

In explaining his decision to step down, Wilson stated that it aligns with the upcoming phase of Air India’s expansion. With foundational aspects in place and a substantial aircraft orderbook set for deliveries starting in 2027, Wilson believes it is the right time to pass on the responsibilities for the airline’s continued growth.

Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran commended Wilson’s leadership during challenging times, acknowledging the team’s resilience in navigating external challenges like post-Covid disruptions and geopolitical pressures. Chandrasekaran expressed gratitude for Wilson’s contributions in shaping the new direction of Air India.

In a message to employees, Wilson expressed pride in their accomplishments amidst various challenges faced during his tenure. He emphasized the airline’s upcoming growth phase with major aircraft deliveries expected in the near future.

Wilson, who assumed his position in July 2022 following the Tata Group’s takeover of Air India, has led a comprehensive turnaround effort. His departure now paves the way for a new leadership era as the airline prepares for extensive fleet expansion and global strategic positioning.
