Just moments after Albertans rang in the new year with cheers of “Three, two, one,” Stacey Simpson, the owner of Lucky 7 Cattle Co., found herself counting in disbelief: “One, two, three?” Simpson, a breeder of Red and Black Angus cattle in Sedgewick, Alberta, was not taken aback when her five-year-old heifer, Dukey, began showing signs of labor three hours into 2026. However, what did surprise her was that Dukey’s labor continued even after giving birth to two calves.
As Simpson was leaving the maternity pen, her father suggested she check on Dukey again. Upon reexamination, Simpson discovered a third calf on the way while assisting the cow. The triplets, named Carla, Darla, and Marla, were born healthy, a rare and fortunate outcome, given the slim chances of survival for triplet calves.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Lucky 7 Cattle Co. has welcomed thriving triplets. Last year, Dukey’s mother gave birth to Hewey, Dewey, and Louie, who are still part of the herd. According to Simpson, their birth was even more extraordinary as all three calves were delivered without assistance.
Kylie Simpson, Stacey’s sister and a fellow Lucky 7 farmer, emphasized the rarity of such an event, especially considering they only have 35 cows. The decision on whether Carla, Darla, and Marla will be kept for breeding or sold is yet to be made.
Meanwhile, the attention garnered by the triplets has led to a surge in social media following for Lucky 7 Cattle Co. A video featuring the mother and her calves on the farm’s Facebook page has received nearly two million views, with viewers from around the globe expressing fascination.
