“Alcatraz-bound Coyote’s Epic 3km Ocean Swim”

Technology"Alcatraz-bound Coyote's Epic 3km Ocean Swim"

A wild dog recently made an extraordinary swim across ocean currents, covering a distance of 3 kilometers. Camilla Fox, the founder of Project Coyote, expressed amazement at the journey of the so-called “Alcatraz Coyote,” calling it a unique event in her experience with wild canines. Initially believed to have swum from San Francisco to Alcatraz Island, biologists later discovered that the male coyote actually embarked from Angel Island, a California state park nearly twice as far.

Pictures and videos captured the bedraggled coyote struggling to reach the rocky shoreline of Alcatraz on January 24. While scientists confirmed its arrival on the island, the exact reason for its journey remains unclear. Fox suggested that the coyote may have sought to find a mate or establish territory.

Coyotes, known for their adaptability, faced challenges after the swim, prompting concerns from Fox. However, she emphasized the awe-inspiring nature of studying wild animals, highlighting their curiosity akin to domestic dogs.

The island of Alcatraz, formerly a federal penitentiary, now serves as a conservation area for a diverse ecosystem of seabirds and marine life. Joel Berger, a wildlife ecology professor, speculated that the coyote might have swum to Alcatraz seeking sanctuary from aggression in its birth area.

In rural settings, coyotes can pose threats to livestock, prompting concerns about human-coyote interactions in urban areas. Berger noted the intelligence of coyotes in adjusting their behavior to coexist with humans, avoiding conflicts by being active at night and steering clear of certain areas.

Surviving on Alcatraz will require the coyote to feed on seabirds, potentially impacting the island’s bird population. Berger warned of the risk of food scarcity leading to starvation for coyotes, particularly if mating coyotes boost the predator population.

Coyotes, native to North America, play vital roles in ecosystems, according to Berger. Fox emphasized the importance of educating the public about the significance of apex predators like coyotes and reducing negative encounters with them through awareness efforts by Project Coyote.

Researchers at the University of California Davis are studying the DNA of coyotes around Angel Island and San Francisco to gain insights into these animals. The coyote that swam to Alcatraz is part of a group of 14 that colonized Angel Island since 2017, piquing Fox’s anticipation for the coyote’s future journey.
