American Journalist Shelly Kittleson Abducted in Baghdad

WorldAmerican Journalist Shelly Kittleson Abducted in Baghdad

American journalist Shelly Kittleson was reportedly abducted by unidentified individuals in Baghdad on Tuesday evening, as confirmed by local media sources. The incident took place in close proximity to the Baghdad hotel on al-Saadoun Street, where multiple unknown men seized her. Although one suspect has been apprehended, Kittleson’s current whereabouts remain undisclosed.

Iraq’s interior ministry verified the abduction of a “foreign journalist by unidentified individuals” and assured that security forces have initiated operations to locate the perpetrators.

During the pursuit, law enforcement intercepted a vehicle linked to the kidnappers, resulting in the vehicle overturning as the suspects attempted to escape. The ministry further confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection to the incident.

A circulating video, believed to depict the moment of Shelly Kittleson’s abduction, has emerged on social media platforms. The footage, shared by Al Arabiya, seemingly captures the sequence of events in real-time. The video portrays Kittleson standing near the Baghdad hotel on al-Saadoun Street before a car arrives, followed by several men forcibly ushering her into the vehicle, which swiftly departs from the scene.

Shelly Kittleson, an independent journalist renowned for her extensive coverage in some of the world’s most conflict-ridden areas, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and the broader Middle East, had journeyed to Iraq to report on the repercussions of the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran. Her focus lay on analyzing the unfolding conflict’s impact on the region firsthand.

With a portfolio featured in esteemed international publications like Al Monitor, Foreign Policy, BBC, Politico, and New Lines Magazine, Kittleson has garnered acclaim for her field reporting, notably from frontline zones during the battle against the Islamic State (ISIS) and investigations into the activities of pro-Iran militias in Iraq.

The abduction of journalists in Iraq is not an unprecedented occurrence. In March 2023, Russian-Israeli researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov was abducted from a Baghdad cafe and subsequently held captive by the pro-Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah for over 903 days before her eventual release.
