“BCE Announces 690 Job Cuts Amid Ongoing Reorganization”

Business"BCE Announces 690 Job Cuts Amid Ongoing Reorganization"

Bell Canada’s parent company, BCE, has announced the reduction of 690 jobs as part of an ongoing reorganization initiative that commenced in the latter part of the previous year. The company noted that approximately 230 of the positions being eliminated are unionized roles, with most employees being provided with voluntary separation packages.

These job cuts are attributed to various operational initiatives, including the transition of customers to a more robust fiber network and continuous efforts to enhance operational efficiencies. Last November, Bell had already downsized its workforce by nearly 700 positions, primarily targeting non-unionized management roles nationwide.

In October of the preceding year, BCE had revealed its target of achieving $1.5 billion in overall cost savings by 2028 through a comprehensive companywide transformation focusing on operational efficiencies. The company’s strategic moves also include plans to construct a significant AI data center, projected to positively impact Saskatchewan’s economy.

In previous years, BCE had implemented workforce reductions, with a nine percent downsizing affecting around 4,800 jobs in 2024, alongside the divestment of several radio stations and the discontinuation of multiple TV newscasts. This followed an earlier reduction of approximately 1,300 positions in June 2023, amounting to about three percent of its workforce at that time.

During the latest quarter, BCE reported a profit of $616 million attributable to common shareholders, compared to $630 million in the preceding quarter of 2025. The company’s chief executive, Mirko Bibic, highlighted the growth potential of its AI business segment, with plans to elevate revenue targets by one-third and establish a cluster of data centers.

Looking ahead, BCE aims to achieve around $2 billion in revenue from its suite of AI-powered enterprise solutions by 2028, surpassing its previous target of $1.5 billion over a three-year period. Alongside its core offerings in fiber, wireless, and digital media services, BCE emphasizes AI-powered enterprise solutions as a fundamental component of its strategic roadmap.
