An inquiry into potential tampering with temperature sensors at the Paris airport to influence online betting outcomes is shedding light on the increasing trend of climate-related wagers. Several accounts on Polymarket, an online betting platform, scored significant winnings following a sudden 5-degree Celsius temperature spike earlier this month.

The incident has sparked discussions regarding the ethical implications of platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, where users can bet on climate-related events such as hurricane intensity or record-breaking temperatures in 2026. Experts suggest that weather betting could enhance climate science and even sway some climate change skeptics.

Moran Cerf, a neuroscience and business professor at Columbia University, conducted a study on the impact of participation in prediction markets on individuals’ climate perceptions. The research revealed that engagement in climate betting led to increased awareness and concern about climate change, potentially influencing even those initially skeptical of climate issues.

Climate change poses challenges in convincing individuals of the human contribution to global warming, despite a rise in climate-related disasters. A survey by the Angus Reid Institute in January 2025 indicated that a significant portion of Canadians hold varying levels of skepticism towards climate change causes.

Prediction markets offer a unique avenue to bridge the gap between climate skepticism and awareness. These markets provide immediate feedback through real-time probability changes and payouts, prompting individuals to consider long-term climate impacts that might otherwise be overlooked.

Unlike traditional gambling, prediction markets operate by allowing users to trade shares in potential outcomes of specific events, such as weather forecasts. These markets facilitate the aggregation of expert opinions to generate more accurate predictions, aiding fields like insurance risk assessment and scientific research funding.

While short-term binary options are prohibited in Canada, Wealthsimple recently received approval to operate specific prediction markets focusing on economic and climate trends. However, concerns persist about the effectiveness of short-term bets in educating individuals about climate change, with some experts cautioning against the potential for data manipulation in these platforms.

The evolution of prediction markets presents opportunities to enhance climate awareness and scientific collaboration, offering a new approach to aggregating expertise and predicting future events more efficiently than traditional methods.
